Host spotlight: Meet Carol and George
Hosting campers on a Christmas tree farm in Ohio
From working farms and ranches to Indigenous lands and glampsites, a growing community of landowners are generously opening their land to campers. George and Carol, of Heritage Farms in Ohio, have been hosting campers for almost a decade.
Heritage Farms is a 5th generation, 115-acre farm located in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Carol and George are the 5th generation to farm the land; Heritage Farms was founded in 1848 and they’re carrying on a family legacy that started 174 years ago. Carol’s father started raising Christmas trees there in 1955 and Carol and George took over in 1979 growing Christmas trees and other crops. Today, their focus on the farm is agritourism. Carol and George welcome visitors to the land seasonally, and hosting campers at Heritage Farms has been a part of their business model for years.
“It never occurred to them that you could camp on a Christmas tree farm. This has been a family farm for 175 years, and each generation has done something different… This [camping] is one small part of what we’re doing to keep things going.”
