At Hipcamp, we believe in the power of private lands for public good.
New South Wales is simply spectacular, and camping is an exciting way to experience the natural environment and support landowners.
Our goal with the Camping Advocacy Network is to provide a platform for education, advocacy, and connection that will enable supporters of private land camping to come together and create change in their community.
On this page, we will share new information related to private land camping in New South Wales and opportunities to get involved. Stay tuned!

I started hosting campers (& their pets) on our 10 hectares over Christmas 2021. I had 8 very large sites 4km from the nearest town able to accommodate tents, motor homes or caravans. All campers had to bring their own portable toilet & take all rubbish with them. I never had any issue with the campers leaving any rubbish or anything else on site. All campers that I met were great people & appreciative of a place that they could camp outside of a town with more room & able to bring pets.
I was surprised to receive a letter then from our local Shoalhaven Council in September 2022 advising that I had to close down immediately. If I wanted to continue to operate I would have to submit a DA. I would have to provide an amenities block with running water. I thought this was crazy as all guests bring their own portable toilet & can access all the water they want from our house which is about 200 metres away.
The laws bought in December 2022 in NSW apply to properties of at least 15 hectares from my understanding. As I am not a primary producer & only have 10 hectares of beautiful bushland & pasture I am not excempt from this size limit. For the small amount of income the camping generates it was obviously not worth making a major investment on facilities.
I hope things will change in future to enable smaller properties to host campers again.
Hi I'm mel
i just started hosting in late December
I have 100 bush acres on a lake
at this stage I have one large site and and have only hosted 6 different groups so far
these amazing campers have left not one sign of their stay - zero footprint
people need a quiet space in nature to escape and I want to be able to keep offering this to people
I started hosting on 24 November 2022. I enjoyed hosting 39 campers over 2.5 months on my 3.5 acre property until council closed me down. My guests had a wonderful inexpensive experience camping on my property. I have free range chickens, bee, an old fashioned tree swing and plenty of wildlife, big tall gum trees and two dams situated very close to Long Beach Nsw. I have an outdoor toilet, outdoor hot shower and a beautiful swimming pool that I am happy to share. I have outdoor covered picnic areas incase of rain or midday sun. This was a symbiotic relationship for all concerned and I would love to be able to host again.
