California considers modernizing camping rules
Senator McGuire introduces a bill to support camping in California
Camping in California has changed, but camping rules simply haven't kept pace.
Existing state-level regulations require artificial lighting and hot running water. They also totally ban off-leash dogs and farm cats!
But as you know, your campers celebrate our dark skies and certainly don't require hot running water to be safe and comfortable. And we all absolutely love our dogs and other farm animals — in fact, 40% of Americans camp with their pets!
The good news? In February, California’s Senator Mike McGuire introduced a bill in the state legislature (Senate Bill 620) to modernize camping regulations and establish reasonable standards to keep hosts and campers healthy and safe.
The proposal is receiving growing support from a diverse range of organizations representing outdoor recreation, equitable access to the outdoors, farmers and ranchers, rural economic development, and the environment.
We're excited to be part of a coalition encouraging our lawmakers to create appropriate standards for camping areas and ultimately to create more places to stay outside.
What do you think our lawmakers should consider as they streamline camping rules?

It's great to hear that Senator McGuire has introduced a bill to update camping rules in California. Camping is indeed a fantastic activity that allows people to enjoy nature and explore the great outdoors, especially with the abundance of state and national parks we have here in California.
I think there should be some consideration for property owners who may live in a residential areas that are located near said parks, etc. to be able to offer reasonable camping accomodations, even in single-family residential areas. For example, I live near Joshua Tree National Park on 5 acres and would like to be able to offer a camping experience to travelers who are interested in exploring the desert. And with limited camping accommodation within JTNP and only one commercial campground in the area, allowing private homeowners an opportunity to host campers would be ideal.
I thought I would laugh when it said there would be a ban on farm cats. I live on 13 acres in the country with river front property and I have no idea of how many feral cats are in the area. Maybe if I don't give them a name they don't count.
